Granularity is judgment: what resolution should the work have, given the result you want? Meticulousness is fidelity: once that resolution is chosen, does the result actually realize it? A grinder makes the distinction visible. Choosing a fine or coarse grind for the cup you want is granularity. Producing a tight distribution instead of boulders and fines is meticulousness. The setting can be right while the grind is wrong. The same is true of systems, plans, and almost everything else. More detail gives work a finer shape, not higher quality. Choose the wrong granularity and you can perfect the wrong problem. Choose the right one without meticulousness and the intended result exists only on paper.
